The Natural History of the Chicken

Internet connection woes, computer monitor woes, and other issues have prevented me from blogging yet in 2015. So, I thought.. why not re-post one of my favorites? I previously blogged this post in March of 2010. As you may know, I did finally become a chicken mama (again) in 2010. 12 of those original 17 Ameraucanas remain, and are still doing pretty well. I am ready to watch this documentary again.. I just love it. The video and links below are to various youtube segments of the original documentary. Also, if you have Amazon Prime (and a faster internet connection than we do right now!), the full version is free to watch on Amazon. Enjoy!

Dear friends who love chickens (like myself)…
Have you seen this documentary? It’s been around awhile, but it was my first time viewing it on PBS this week. I loved every minute of it (although much of it is admittedly quite bizarre). My desire to be a Chicken Keeper again was strengthened ten-fold. (ummmm… Mr. W, get ready to build that chicken coop!).
A word of caution for Big Saps like myself… grab that box of Kleenexes. (sniffle-sniffle).
This is part 6 of 6 (my favorite), but if you want to view more, click here for part 1 and proceed through all 6 parts.
Back to taxes and purging…. Fun Times!

We have all been standing around the computer captivated and horrified as we watched this unfold. Tears in our eyes! First of sorrow then of joy! What a good lesson. But I have one question...

Why on earth didn't he run out there sooner? Am I the only one who runs out in the yard like a wild woman screaming at coyotes, bobcats, strange dogs, and hawks?

Oh boy...a dose of reality! I've never seen this before - not sure that I want to see the whole series (I'm a sap too).

Yes, Mr. W....that chicken coop needs to be added to the "honey do" list! We need beautiful photos of some little feathered friends!!

Very touching video! What a great lesson this shows. It makes me look at my chickens in a whole new light. I once had a mother hen chase a Great Dane dog away from her little chicks once. I was pretty amazed by her bravery.

I was mad he didn't run out and scare off the hawk! But what a good outcome!
I want chickens too. I'm trying to talk my huband into it but he keeps telling me no.

I am watching this and thinking how could Tammy do this to me....but I wiped my eyes and kept watching...Happy ending!!! I too would be running out waving my arms and screaming. I love my chickens.

I don't think I can watch it.

But, then again I have never even seen the end of Bambi, because I fainted when the hunter shot Bambi's mother!! My poor mom had to carry me out of the theater!

NOW, get back to purging!

Now that was worth staying up for! I can relate to this fellow...I LOVE my chickens and just this morning witnessed my favorite chicken being 'killed' by my Akbash 7.5 month old pup (over 100 lbs) Shep. The story has a happy ending but now that I've seen this video I think I'll have to tell my story in my Blog! Thanks for the inspiration. I hope you have a wonderful (Thursday!) Maura

Cool video!

We lost some chickens this winter......from 24 now down to 16! So I'll need to let the hens hatch some chicks this year.

Taxes...OH SH** I better get busy!

I'll have to watch this later since I'm a chicken-keeper wannabe. LOL I think the hardest part for me will be losing chickens, and it's just one of those things, you know it's gonna happen. I'm such a sap so I know I'll cry. It's hard for me to reconcile myself to animal loss. :-(

Tammy, I love your new blog header, it's gorgeous!

Hi Tammy, Just enjoyed this post so much since I am a chicken keeper too. I kept hoping to see her little head pop up and was tickled when I did. I love happy endings,
Sue

I think I'm enjoying the comments from your blog readers as much as the video. Being a chicken keeper has entered our heads too, but I've got my hands full with the donkeys right now.

Hmmm.... OK, I am not getting chickens. Too much heartbreak and sorrow and worry and mixed emotions for me.

Hope your catching up!

Oh how I needed this chicken break! I too am knee deep in paperwork and taxes. I have three different taxes to report. One farm (Ponderosa) and two corporation taxes. 'Feelin' a bit overwhelmed here. The only time Hubs touches the taxes is to sign them. Sound familiar girls???

Ya'll have a wonderfully blessed day!!!

Good luck with those chicks! Our son and one of our daughters both have chickens. Son has an endangered species one. Don't know which one though.

Hey Tammy! Hope all is well. Been missing your posts lately! And yes, Nezzy, I feel your pain. Husband would go to prison for tax evasion if something happened to me. His contribution is using duplicate checks so I can track his expenses. Have a blessed day :0!

I saw this on the list when we had Netflix--I wish we had gotten it! I soooooo want chickens, I can't even tell you. It's on Jay's list to build me a coop, but it's a veeeeeery long list, so I may have to wait til next year.

Oh my! I too want chickens.. I live in the city so I would need a fence and a coop. Would not mind a fence. We have talked about one for 30 years...I think it's about time we get to it!
Happy Spring! Hope the taxes went okay.
