The Holiday Weekend

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend. Happy Independence Day!

Here are just a few things that have been happening around here.

We vaccinated and banded calves this morning. Then Mr. W hopped on the tractor, raked the two fields nearest our house. When that was complete, he hopped on the other tractor and finished up the baling there as well. And then he had to go to work for 8 hours. Impressive, huh? Something tells me he’s gonna be one tired fella after this day is complete.IMG_0966

An update on our 2010 Purple Martins…

I am happy to announce we have had two families of Purple Martins in our martin house in the front yard this year. I’ve waited a long time for this. The yard and surrounding areas are filled with their beautiful music morning and night. Love it! Here are a couple of shots from last weekend… the young ‘uns learning how to fly.

A quick mosaic of a few of the blooms we have here now, our resident tree frog on the front porch (sorry, Patti), and a hummingbird nest I found today while blackberry picking.

7-3-10 mosaic

Here’s a better look at that hummingbird nest. It’s empty now, but oh the intricate weaving the tiny birds did on this. I’ve wanted to find a hummingbird nest for many years… so this was monumental for me ;) Not being picky, but next time it would be super cool to see eggs or babies…

We plan to attend my hometown fireworks celebration tomorrow night -- small town… short and sweet fireworks display.  We’ll visit with family and friends while we’re there. What are your plans this holiday weekend? A Happy and Safe 4th to you and yours!

I love lokoing at photos of life on a farm....simply beautiful!!! Oh thanks for putting a link to my blog on your sidebar.I noticed that just now :) :) :) So cool!!! Your chickens have the best chicken coop ever...and the Purple Marlins have the cutest bird house I've ever seen :) :) :) Near where I live there are quite a few "starlings"...I think that's what they're called and scrub jays...look like blue jays...but their bellies are little different color...back to the starlings...when you catch them at the right time of day...it's like watching the bird version of the aurora borealis...amazing. My dad and I will try and catch some fireworks here in town!!! I have a special function on my camera just for nighttime fireworks...so I want to go try it out :) :) Have a great day tomorrow. Happy 4th of July!!!! Love and hugs, Heather :)

Hey fine looking tractor man you have there!
It's okay on the frog, I closed my eyes when I got to that picture.
You are one lucky person, we have never found a hummingbird nest.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Hi Tammy! Oh, how I wish I could find a hum nest!
Your pictures of it just thrilled me! Next year, we put you in charge of finding one with the tiny eggs in it!
Yep, your hubby is going to be one tired man! I know how J is after haying. he says he can still feel the tractor seat on his bum in his sleep :)

Don't forget about the Ruby and Gracie post. They have fans who are waiting....Just love 'em!
Have a wonderful and safe 4th!

What wonderful things on your farm... families of purple martins, sweet little tree frogs, hummingbirds building nests, flowers of every color in bloom.... and a family that works together to make their farm the most wonderful place on earth to live. Happy 4th of July to you my friend!

What a lovely photo of the hummingbird nest! So glad you were finally blessed with the purple martins. Life's simple pleasures really are the best, are they not?

After church tomorrow, we will walk through the booths set up down by the local lake, see a small civil war re-enactment group, head to some friends for an early dinner and games, and then rush to town to see the fireworks and drink coffee (it gets cool here in the p.m.)
Enjoy a wonderful July 4th!

Whew! Yall are busy! Good photos. I've never seen a hummingbird nest; I've barely seen the hummingbirds. I've often thought that their little babies must be 'little' indeed:) Happy 4th!!!

I've been MIA and just look at your fantastic blog! Love looking at your pictures... it's always like taking vacation. Of course, thats because I've not working at the farm and then working another 8 hours. I might just die.

Tammy there are so many good and fun things in this post I don't know where to start! I hope you had a great 4th, I am a little late getting around to the blogs :( Everyone around us is cutting and it must be really special for you to look out and see your Hubby gettin it done so you will have hay for the winter. I have never found a hummer's nest, that is cool too. Congratulations on the Purple Martins and getting to watch the babies fledge! Always, always love your mosaics and we just found blackberries we didn't know we had :) Now if we could just get rid of the humidity!

Great pictures! I love the bird's nest.

A few weeks ago some birds were trying to build a nest in our grill. It was NOT a pretty sight and very annoying! I'm sending the birds down to you!

Hope you had a great weekend!

Tammy, I just love your Purple Martin house, very chic! : )

The intricacy of the hummingbird nest is amazing. We've spotted a few zipping around the yard so we put up a feeder but no signs of nests.

After hearing about Mr W's day I'll have to tell the Artist he isn't working hard enough! Ha!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weeekend and I love your header photo. I'm quite jealous that you guys have the red, white AND blue...red and white is a little boring in comparison! : )

I'll be the purple martins sound beautiful! Good luck with the hummingbird nest. I hope some move in soon.

Those purple martins are seriously beautiful. They have always fascinated me and yet I cannot seem to entice them to our spot of paradise.

Mr. definitely put in a full day. Hope you pampered him a bit at the end of the day.

I'll have to admit I'd never given a humming bird nest a thought. We have many of them and it never occurred to me to wonder where they went when they weren't buzzing the feeders. What a duh moment!

Later!
