A Darn Near Perfect Day

After a morning of checking cattle, cleaning the little chicken coop, and other such chores, the Blacksmith and I headed to Amish Country for a nice peaceful afternoon. I’ve often said this outing is one of the best stress-relievers I’ve ever found (that is, besides my renewed hobby of baby chick cuddling or the always-calming little donkey hugs).

Headed down the road to one of the new Amish stores, our first relaxing sight…

We bought lumber for the next project (bigger chicken coop) at the Amish lumberyard. This is what was going on outside the yard…

Along the way, we stopped at one of the Blacksmith’s Amish friend’s home. He is an older gentleman who has been ill for quite awhile, but happily is doing better now. He was helping his wife piece a quilt. Yes, it’s true, an Amish man was quilting. Much to my delight, his wife invited me in also, and we visited inside and outside for awhile. They are both treasures! I had bought some bread in her bakery and then she gave me three nice starts of Rose of Sharon. She also showed me how she makes a wren house out of a worn out straw hat.

On the way home we stopped by our “English” friends who have the blueberry patch. They truly have a history-rich home which I hope to share more of in a future blog post (if it’s agreeable with both of them).  We sampled organic cherries and blueberries… yum!

Ah yes, what a nice, non-stressful afternoon. Just what we both needed. But then, there was more baby chick cuddling in store when we returned home. They have grown soooo much! Can you tell?

After a little run is made to go with the little portable coop, we’ll begin on the bigger permanent coop. All 17 chicks are doing well so far (I miscounted in the beginning – they sent me an extra baby). Thanks, Cackle!

Hope all is well in your neck of the woods!

My hubby and I went to our Amish Country back in November and it was the best time I've had in ages. Of course, I don't have any stories like your visit!!! Glad the chicks are doing well!

It sounds like the perfect day. Good for you! I too love going to Amish stores. Everything just seems to move slower there, and I like that. It is a nice change because my life seems to move 100 mph!

Good morning Tammy! What a wonderful day you had and what a special treat to be able to visit with an Amish couple. You'll have to pass along what you learned about making a wren house out of a straw hat...that sounds VERY interesting. Love the photo of the Amish gentlemen moving the logs with the horses. Your chicks are really growing...in a few more months you'll be getting eggs! Enjoy your day...Maura :)

Wow, you're already off on another chicken coup! Really liked the last one, is it going to be a bigger one of the last design?

What a great day! The chicks are so adorable...I wouldn't get anything done because I'd be snuggling all the time. Slowing down and taking a little trip like that sounds great!

Talk to you soon.

Such a lovely way to spend the day with your neighbors! :-) Are the blueberries ready? I'd better get myself over to the farmers market this weekend then.

Tammy it is so true that a trip to the Amish can just bring peace to the soul. The countryside is beautiful and their neat and orderly farms are soothing. We love to take day trips on the country roads. Your chicks are growing up :) Love your picture of the Amish lumber yard. Your header is beautiful, it takes me way back. Memeories of when I was little.

Ahhh, thanks, I needed that!!! :-)
Things on our farm have been frantic busy and I do enjoy a good quiet (4 legged) cuddle to relieve stress. In fact, I prayed for strength the other day and was answered with "a piece of quiet" and a good snuggle w/a pony... Love all your pics and words.
hugs,
Leslie
PS - I thought of you as I hung my THREE gingham blouses to dry. And I won't mention my DD who's wardrobe's largely gingham! Glad there's another farm gal out there like me! <3

You are so right ... want to relax, head to Amish country ... there is just a peace that comes over us as we drive in the rural regions.

Those little fuzzy 'things' are too cute! And, an extra to boot! Hope it was a hen ...

Happy Father's Day to your hubs!

Enjoyed my visit to Flat Creek Farm today; lovely photos. Last year I met a gentleman quilter who, routinely wins blue ribbon at the WV state fair. He sells his quilts for thousands of dollars so he must be doing a lot of things right.

Oh! You know how much I love the Amish, great photos...reading yet another book. I could use some chick cuddling, my older girls don't like to cuddle much anymore, I miss the baby stage.
My computer has been sick but it is all better now! Time to catch up....
