Once again, it has been too long.. but alas, I am back again.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of touring a beautiful garden with a local garden club. This lovely paradise, with so many painstakingly gorgeous details, happens to belong to my BFF’s sister Beverly and her husband Wayne. They have both worked diligently on this project, for years.. perhaps. I will share (way too many) pictures I took from that morning. It is the most peaceful and serene garden I have ever been in. Can you feel it? Also, pieces of their families’ history are intertwined into the space. I just love Rusty Stuff when it is used so creatively!

<img title="IMG_2483" style="border-top: 0px; Beverly and Wayne live next to Bev’s old “homeplace.” One time when I was staying overnight at their house, Carol (my BFF) suggested we (including her two sisters) trek out across the “wilderness” to her grandparents’ place. We did, and eventually got there. However we got lost on the way back home. I would say Carol and I were about 10 or 11 at the time and we were the older chicks in the group. It was traumatic.. but exciting! I would say it was only an hour or less we were “out there” finding our way, but it seemed like forever to four lost girls. We all had on boots which became very caked with mud while walking through the pastures. By the time we finally got back to their house, the boots were so heavy we could hardly walk. And Carol’s Mom was livid! “You girls could have been killed by the mean bull in the pasture!” said She. It is a great memory to me though, and I will remember it always <3 You see, at that time, I was still a young innocent small town girl who thought country life was the bestest thing ever!

Thanks for coming along on the tour. See you soon, I hope!

Flat Creek Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13628767205698280033noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586394728154947567.post-22286616206673682162016-05-10T12:30:00.001-05:002016-05-10T12:30:26.715-05:00Warm Springs Ranch ~ Love those Clydesdales!
Yesterday, Mr. W and I took an “us” day. We spent the morning at Warm Springs Ranch near Boonville, Missouri. We then did some antiquing, followed by shopping and a late lunch at Cracker Barrel. I have been yearning to visit Warm Springs since 2008 (the year the Ranch moved just a little over an hour away from us). I was not disappointed, and cannot wait to return!

I will share our tour with mostly photos and very little “talk!” Pic heavy I know.. but, well, I am making up for lost time.. haha!

The tour began with a short video that was just a glorious celebration of the Clydesdales, and included in the mix was a snippet of my favorite Budweiser commercial.. which brought tears to my eyes. I am such a sucker for the Clydesdales, and when they throw in my favorite little equine.. well… it’s a winning combination for me.

Let the tour begin…

<img title="" style="border-top: 0px; Some thoughtful friends took me on a little owl adventure this morning to see a nest of two baby owls. There are no words for this kind of cuteness! (edited: at first we thought these might be Barred Owl babies, but they are Great Horned Owls). That “baby down” can throw you off!

Great Horned Owl Babies

Happy Spring to all!!

Flat Creek Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13628767205698280033noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586394728154947567.post-63603515076771928212015-12-21T10:14:00.001-06:002015-12-21T10:20:14.840-06:00A Happy, Merry Hee Haw Christmas to All!

Flat Creek Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13628767205698280033noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586394728154947567.post-32985447427749001242015-11-02T13:00:00.001-06:002015-11-03T13:18:35.612-06:00“Papa Jim” Giveaway Winner
Thanks to those who put their names in the hat! She mentioned someday, oh, she might just print it out for her girls (my sister and me) and for her grandson (the Fiddler). Years passed and she continued to write a few stories from her memories here and there. Several months ago she contacted Daydream Books and Arts and after talking with them, she decided she would go ahead and publish. After all, it was going to be little to no monetary investment and this would be a way to preserve and share these precious stories. Per my Mom, Daydream was a joy to work with. She sent them her stories – they (Stephanie) proofed, edited, and did several other things to help with the process. A few short months later, Papa Jim became a reality and was published.

Stephanie, who owns and runs Daydream Books and Arts, began the business a couple of years ago after publishing her first book. She enjoyed it so much that she wanted to help others do the same. Per Stephanie, “I wanted to help people embrace their creativity, promote it, get their work and their name out there to the public... to share their daydreams.” And so began Daydream Books and Arts in a little town called New Cambria, Missouri – not all that far from where we live.

Of course, I treasure this book. I can remember Papa Jim a little bit (he passed when I was only 2). The man I remember is a strong, tall, gentle, caring, soft-spoken man. All of my life I have heard wonderful stories of Papa and Mama (Grandpa and Grandma W to me). Grandma, in fact, moved to Paris and lived right behind us from the time I was about 8 years old. Sister and I would run those few steps to Grandma’s whenever we needed a little TLC (many times in the form of warm cookies or hugs or just a listening ear). She was a dear and priceless treasure to us. So, you can imagine I was pretty happy that these precious stories of days gone-by are now preserved for generations to come.

Here is a summary of Papa Jim, per Stephanie of Daydream Books and Arts:

“Charlotte Utterback has written these stories of her family and childhood over recent years. She wishes to share her memories with her remaining family, and anyone else interested in reminiscing of a simpler, more peaceful time. Be ready to meet her family, celebrate their joy, feel their heartaches, and learn from their way of life.”

Mary Margaret and Baby Charlotte

At only 120 pages, it is a fairly short read. Papa Jim is a wholesome, innocent book. It is also sprinkled with warm humor in the simple joys, and hope through the heartaches. While reading, you can journey back to rural and small town life in the 40’s and 50’s. This was a time when nothing was wasted, families were treasured, and things were oh-so-much simpler.

I am giving away one autographed copy of Papa Jim. Forging, that is. Mr. W has a brand new shop, awaiting insulation (yay!). Till then, he is still forging Garden Trowels and other Good Things in his old Blacksmith Shop (my future She Shed, Potting Shed, etc.. yay for me too!).

Here is a little glimpse at what it takes to make a garden trowel from a railroad spike.

Only the best finished products are kept. Do you find yourself asking that question – a lot?! Me too! I had mentioned posting an update on the Shouse (aka Barn-Cottage). Well, that didn’t happen. Yet. But soon. I have company coming over the course of the next couple of weeks, so that will force me into cleaning mode.. and therefore, I can see that would be a great time to take pics :)

Today I want to share a picture of my father-in-law, the Blacksmith’s Pops, our dear “G-pa.” He hasn’t been able to live at his home since last Summer (World War II Vet, in his 90’s). We see him pretty often, but hadn’t gotten around to getting his beloved dog the updated vaccinations so “Shorty” could go to the care facility and visit. Last week, I finally accomplished the vet visit. Over the weekend.. these two were reunited. Needless to say, it was a very happy moment! Had to share. There will be more Shorty visits in the near future.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Let’s see, lots of things happening around here. We are {mostly} moved into the Shouse (aka Barn/Cottage). This weekend we hope to move the all-important kitchen appliances to our new abode. I will try to do an update with pics next week on the Shouse. Lots of tasks have been accomplished, but still many details to finish. Very happy with our little Barn/Cottage <3
So, what else is new? I have a new donkey.. but she needs some work. I will share a photo of “Opal” at the end of this post. {Teaser}
Our Gorgeous Trumpeter Swans have moved on, but they’ve been replaced in the same spot with the most ginormous flock of geese that I have ever had the pleasure to view!! It was impossible to show just how many geese were there, but here is a sampling. This group was mostly Snow Geese, but there were also Canadians and various others. It is pure eye candy for the Avian Lover, but probably not a welcome sight for the host (Farmer).
Now, about this new donkey. We were furniture shopping over the weekend, and next door was one of our favorite antique malls to peruse: Veranda Antique Mall. Opal appeared to me, like a vision, when I first walked in the door (after grumbling because no purses are allowed-- you must lock them up in a locker or take them back to your vehicle – I get it, buuuut, it’s a pain.. ok?!). There she was, my Beautiful White Donkey in all her glory, pulling a cart with loose wheels. It was love at first sight, in spite of a few flaws.. a loose tail and ear, some chips here and there, and the obvious.. wheels propped up on either side of the cart. She holds promise though. Don’t you think? Best part is, Ruby and Gracie will not be jealous of Opal.. and she doesn’t eat much. Just an investment of Bondo repair putty and some artistic TLC and she should be good to go. I will update with pics as she is transformed.
Presenting Opal…
So, I thought.. why not re-post one of my favorites? I previously blogged this post in March of 2010. As you may know, I did finally become a chicken mama (again) in 2010. 12 of those original 17 Ameraucanas remain, and are still doing pretty well. I am ready to watch this documentary again.. I just love it. The video and links below are to various youtube segments of the original documentary. Also, if you have Amazon Prime (and a faster internet connection than we do right now!), the full version is free to watch on Amazon. Enjoy!
Dear friends who love chickens (like myself)…
Have you seen this documentary? It’s been around awhile, but it was my first time viewing it on PBS this week. I loved every minute of it (although much of it is admittedly quite bizarre). My desire to be a Chicken Keeper again was strengthened ten-fold. (ummmm… Mr. W, get ready to build that chicken coop!).
A word of caution for Big Saps like myself… grab that box of Kleenexes. (sniffle-sniffle).
This is part 6 of 6 (my favorite), but if you want to view more, click here for part 1 and proceed through all 6 parts.
Thanks to Mr. Eagle Eye, we have been fortunate enough to observe a nice flock of Trumpeter Swans along our regular route for the past few weeks. At first, Mr. W remarked, “hey, some snow geese.” However, after I took the zoomed but blurry pics I realized they looked far too graceful to be snow geese. Trumpeter Swans they are! We have been back through that route several times since that first day. Today I was able to capture some non-blurry shots. Yay! I’ll make you wait to the end of this post for that though.

We spotted a bald eagle today also. Such a majestic and glorious bird!

<img title="IMG_8863" style="border-top: 0px; Also, I reported our sightings to the conservation department, but haven’t heard back if they have actually investigated “our” local flock or not.

“Family: Anatidae (ducks, geese, swans) in the order Anseriformes
Description: An all-white swan with a wingspan of nearly 8 feet. They fly with their extraordinarily long necks outstretched. Distinguished from tundra swan by its straight upper bill and the broad base of the bill against the eye, making the eye appear as part of the bill from a distance. Voice is a low trumpetlike sound; that of the young is higher and more nasal.
Size: Length: 60 inches (tip of bill to tip of tail).
Habitat and conservation: Formerly a common migrant statewide and summer resident in northern Missouri. Currently, individuals and family groups winter in Missouri, foraging in shallow water. Some birds may be from the wild population of the Nebraska Sandhills, but most are from captive breeding programs. If you see trumpeter swans with neck collars, use your binoculars to see the color and numbers of the collar, and report them to the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Foods: Trumpeter swans forage in shallow water on aquatic vegetation, roots, seeds, and insects.
Distribution in Missouri: Statewide.
Status: Rare winter resident at marshes, lakes, and rivers; formerly a common migrant statewide and summer resident in northern Missouri. A Species of Conservation Concern, it is considered critically imperiled in our state.
Life cycle: Trumpeter swans breed usually in freshwater habitats with dense emergent vegetation, as in inland waters and ponds. Nests are constructed of emergent vegetation and feathers, on the ground surrounded with water. Four to 6 eggs are laid; these are incubated for 33–37 days, and the young fledge in 91–119. Breeding in Missouri is extremely rare but may become more common in the future.
Human connections: There are only about 5,000 trumpeter swans in the Midwest, and they are considered extirpated from our state. Hunters who shoot trumpeter swans risk thousands of dollars in fines and possible jail. If you’re hunting snow geese, make sure you can distinguish between them and trumpeter swans!
Ecosystem connections:
Swans, geese, and other aquatic grazers are important components of wetland, pond, and lake ecosystems, pruning the steadily growing vegetation and insect populations. In turn, these birds, especially their vulnerable eggs and young, provide food for carnivores.”

As you will see from the excerpt above, they are still considered imperiled and extirpated from our State. It warms my heart to see so many healthy Trumpeters in one flock! Also, my favorite book as a 10 or 11 year old girl was The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White. I’ve always been a bit partial to geese and swans. This has definitely been a highlight of my 2014 to say the least. They are incredibly beautiful and graceful birds.

Enjoy your weekend! Hope you can get out there and enjoy some nature in your neck of the woods!

Flat Creek Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13628767205698280033noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586394728154947567.post-4554910218093290822014-11-28T19:27:00.001-06:002015-11-03T13:25:59.832-06:00A Wine Barrel Chair
Not just any old chair. It’s Thanksgiving Week already.. time surely does fly!

Seems hard to believe we celebrated a wedding nearly a month ago. I put together a video with many of the wedding pics (are you ready for this? nearly 12 minutes worth!). I hope at some time in the near future to do a post with descriptions on the pics, etc. For instance, our Bride made a lot of beautiful décor, signs and keepsakes. The Groom also made several items, including a bench from a downed oak here on the farm. The guests signed the bench. The Bride’s parents are quite accomplished Vintners and several months ago they created a special wine to share with the guests (it was wonderful!). Also, the Blacksmith.. {of course, he is the Father of the Groom and my hubs}.. forged the Damascus wedding band for the Groom. You’ll see glimpses of all of these treasures and more in this video.

Be sure to catch the fourth and final song in this video -- “Last Date” by The Trip Daddys. They played the wedding reception. Awesome band and really nice guys!

Hope you enjoy! Donkey Basketball
I have been very upset this week after finding out our local school is hosting Donkey Basketball. We were a big part of that school when the Fiddler attended K-12 there. We had some really great times and fundraisers through the years. None. Nada. Zip… involved exploitation of animals. I contacted the administrators of the school. The only response I received back (from one of the administrators) was very flippant (which added to my ire). I am ashamed for the school. I assume the event will proceed as planned tonight since I was informed there are indeed contracts in effect.

In my view, this ranks right up there with Donkey Roping. If you’d like to read the REAL story on Donkey Basketball, here ya go: Stop Donkey Basketball. Does anyone else find this video in the link disturbing? Especially since we are presenting that this is all “okay” to the kids in attendance.

My first question when I saw the sign in town was “Why?” With all of the other positive fundraisers out there, why must we present this to the children and make them think this type of behavior is okay? Full size humans riding miniature donkeys? Hmmm.. what is wrong with this picture?

source

Mark Meyers of Peaceful Donkey Rescue wrote a wonderful article based on the age-old question: Why Do People Abuse Donkeys?

Like many answers to life’s questions, it can be found in the Bible.

“Why Do People Abuse Donkeys?

In a donkey rescue organization two questions pop up in every conversation, “Why do donkeys need rescuing?” and “Why do people abuse donkeys”. The first question is usually answered by an introduction to the 1000 plus donkeys at our rescue, the second question however has always been a tough one to answer. Who can truly understand the human mind? How can we broad brush everyone? What separates those who handle animals roughly from those who inflict abuse? How can one truly explain the motivation behind abuse?

The answer came one Saturday afternoon while giving a tour of the rescue to a church group. The kids and parents alike genuinely enjoyed the donkeys. They saw how lovable and sweet these animals were. They remarked on how gentle and quiet they were with even the smallest of the children. They saw first hand the fear and aggression in the abused donkeys. They saw the scars, the split ears, the lumps, the bruises and the cut noses. They were able, for the first time in many of their lives, to see firsthand the result of cruelty that no animal should ever have to face.

After the tour, the Pastor made the remark that the donkey was the only mammal in the bible to be given the power of human speech. I was amazed! I had heard the stories in Sunday School, even read the bible a time or two, but how could I have forgotten this? Embarrassed, I asked to know more. I thought that this might make an interesting addition to my tours, lectures and arguments. What I heard went much deeper than an amusing anecdote, what I heard answered the age old question, “Why do people abuse donkeys?”
Numbers 22:21
Balaam, a prophet of God, was employed by some local rich folks to speak out against Israel. He saddled up his donkey and began a trip to Kirjathhuzoth. God was really upset that Balaam was going against his wishes and sent an angel to stop him. As the man and donkey traveled down a road the donkey saw the angel in front of her and turned away. Angry at her apparent misbehavior, Balaam whipped the donkey. Again the pair traveled on until the donkey once again saw the angel blocking the road. Again she turned away and again she was whipped.

Once their journey resumed, the angel blocked a narrow passage between two walls and as the donkey turned away, she crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. As the donkey could not get away from the angel, she simply laid down. Balaam was outraged by this transgression and whipped the donkey without mercy.

As God saw this taking place, He gave the donkey the gift of speech. The donkey said, in only the way a donkey could, “Why are you beating me? Am I not the same donkey that has been faithful to you all of these years? Am I not the same donkey who has always taken you wherever you wanted to go? Why are you beating me?”

And Balaam replied, “Because you made me look stupid”

The story goes on the say that the angel appeared to Balaam and explained to him that if the donkey had not turned away he would have killed him. And Balaam saw the error of his ways and they all lived happily ever after.

But...........

I had the answer! I was amazed at its simplicity and honesty. I had always searched for a deeper meaning; perhaps a genetic deficiency, or eating paint chips as children, or too much fast food and television. But it was none of these things. It was something simpler, something that weak people have no tolerance for and ignorant people lash out at. The one thing that attacks us as the “superior” being.

Question: Why do people abuse donkey?

Answer: Because they make us look stupid.

No other animal that I have ever come across has the ability to take all of your power away like a donkey. In a parade one of my donkeys stopped and would not move. On a pack trip 2 of my donkeys decided that it was time to stop after just 2 hours of hiking. In both cases I was powerless. They had all of the control over the situation. If a donkey makes a decision, he will stand by it until the end. The only way to get him to change his decision is to make him think that he has had a better idea.

You cannot force a donkey to do anything. Beating will only make him more persistent. More persistent leads to more frustration on the part of the abuser. More frustration leads to more beating. You can beat most animals into doing anything including killing themselves. You cannot do this to a donkey. Simply stated, they make us look stupid.

Eventually, we resumed the parade route as well as the pack trip. In both cases, the donkeys simply had made a new decision and all was well in their world once again. As I enjoy these particular traits of my donkeys, I never get frustrated with it. Many times I take the opportunity to sit back and reflect on what may lie in my path (life) that may be blocking my way.

Mark Meyers
Executive Director
Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue”

Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue is a wonderful organization. You can check them out here.

I hope this never happens again. If it does (God Forbid), I hope my army of donkey/critter lovers will help me out :) In the meantime, please at least consider this: if you see your locals are going to present such an event, perhaps you can just donate money directly to the cause (instead of promoting Donkey Basketball)… and let them know you do not approve.

Donkey Whisperer..
over and out! ♥

Flat Creek Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13628767205698280033noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586394728154947567.post-66785010699872839892014-11-10T18:51:00.001-06:002014-11-15T13:03:59.443-06:00Oh, November…
You are passing much too quickly!

I took a little time to check out some things going on around the farm right before dusk. 70’s today.. cold weather on the way!

Peeky Calf – he would have taken the treat right from my hand, but Shorty dog shooed him away.

Great Blue Heron, I’ve tried for years to get a decent picture of you. We had decided some time ago that our old house was beyond fixing up (trust me on this one!). We will recycle as much as we can of the wood, doors, windows, etc.. but eventually it will be gone. The Shouse is our “transition time” abode until we can get a new house built where the old house now stands. (Location-wise, Shouse is just a few feet behind the old house). Then after the new house is built, the plan is for the shouse to become a craft retreat, canning shack, B&B for (invited.. lol) guests, family dinner place, occasional man cave, etc etc. Just know that the Blacksmith and I typically take a while to get things done so this new house thing will not happen overnight. Guarantee it :) Therefore we want to make the Shouse as comfy and cozy as possible. Hopefully the basic amenities such as kitchen and laundry will be finished in a few short weeks so we can move in before the really cold stuff hits!

Have a great weekend!!

Flat Creek Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13628767205698280033noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586394728154947567.post-53729738254148926722014-10-29T16:18:00.001-05:002014-10-29T16:19:57.205-05:00Shouse Update–Cabinet Progress
Here is where we are today in our quest for a kitchen in the BarnCottage, aka Shouse. The Blacksmith is working on plumbing and other details today. We’ll measure for countertops within the next couple of days and order. I have cabinet trim pieces and some cabinet hardware to paint. Plus, a large pantry cabinet needs painting to match the Valspar Woodlawn Colonial Gray (the color choice for the cabinets). The additional boards you see will be concealed by barn wood at some point (soon, I hope). They were necessary to support the cabinets really well in this pole barn.

I’m a-lovin’ the colander light fixture over the sink.

Guess who I see now when I look out my new kitchen window?
